Safeguarding
It is essential that everyone who works with children is aware of and understands their responsibilities in safeguarding children.
Every Child Matters: Change for Children is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.
The Government’s aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic well-being
The guidance is addressed to all practitioners and front-line managers who have particular responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and to senior and operational managers in organisations that are responsible for commissioning or providing services to children, young people, parents and carers.

DFE Child Protection Guidance
Children who are defined as being “in need” are those whose vulnerability is such that they are unlikely to reach or maintain a satisfactory level of health or development.
Abuse can be physical, emotional or sexual. Neglect is the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs.
If you have any concerns about the welfare of a child you should immediately discuss them with a permanent member of staff and, if possible, the designated teacher. Every school has a teacher designated for Child Protection.
It is better to be safe than sorry so even the slightest worry should be shared with a more senior member of staff. Where concerns arise as a result of information given by a child it is important to reassure the child but not to promise confidentiality.
